Tool Review: Dremel Pet Nail Grooming Kit

Today I have an adorable guest, my friend Kim’s cute dog.

Meet Ronin, he’s a terrier.

He was a good sport and helped me out with this tool review. Ronin hates having his nails clipped. I’ve read that sometimes it can be uncomfortable for animals to have their nails clipped because it puts pressure on their paws.

Dremel has a new tool to help trim pet’s nails. Dremel Pet Nail Grooming Rotary Tool
Dremel 7300 Series 4.8-Volt Pet Nail Grooming Cordless Rotary Tool with 7 AttachmentsOne super nice thing about this tool is that it’s cordless! You can take it anywhere you and your pet prefer. This is what your kit includes, Dremel cordless rotary tool, battery, charger, guard, bit, sanding disks and wrench.

Using the Dremel pet grooming kit is easy. If you’re going to use the nail guard, remove the gray collar. Place the bit in the rotary tool collet on top.

Push down the blue oval button and rotate the black nut until it stops, keep holding the blue button down. Use the wrench and tighten the nut (righty tighty 🙂 ).

On the bit, pull down the quick disconnect sleeve and place the sanding disk on the bit.  Rotate the sanding disk a little and let go of the quick disconnect sleeve.

Open up the guard and place it on the threaded part of the rotary tool, close the guard and tighten it on the threads.

Now place the clear part of the guard on top. There are 3 depth settings (1, 2, 3) depending on how short your pets nails are. Now you are ready to go. To operate, switch the on switch to LO or HI.

Dremel suggests that your pet may need to get used to the smell of the tool to become more comfortable. Ronin took some time to sniff the tool.

Next Kim placed Ronin’s paw up to the guard and it fit really well. Dremel suggests only holding each nail to the disk for 3 seconds or less. Repeat as necessary, but this will keep the nail from getting to warm and uncomfortable. The nail guard is also a really nice feature. It gives a place for the paw to rest and puts the nail at a 45 deg angle for the trimming. Ronin needs to get used to the Dremel’s sound, it made him skittish.  It’s the same sound of his fur trimmer that he doesn’t love.

When you are done trimming nails, you can change out the sanding disk for any of the other traditional Dremel bits.  Then you can use it as a normal rotary tool (with only 2 speeds though) and make cool things like these cool engraved ornaments, or these ideas.
