Rustic Farmhouse Magnet Board and Frame

My son is in first grade and brings home lots and lots of art projects from school. He requested a magnet board for his room to show off the latest and greatest creation.  Since his bed was built from a salvaged barn, I thought shiny galvanized metal and new pine might look funny by his very rustic bed.  I remembered seeing my friend Mindi use Better with Age stain on some of her projects and really liked the look. While checking out Better with Age on Amy Howard Home, I noticed that she also has a zinc patina solution to make new sheet metal look old – sweet both problems solved.  (I really want to try and do a console table top with that zinc patina, so this project is a good trial for that!)

I had a partially used piece of galvanized sheet metal laying around from a previous project, that I cut down to size with tin snips. Very shiny.

This metal was really the determining factor for the size of the magnet board. The metal piece I used was 24″ x 36″ after I cut off the top. You can really make the board and frame whatever size you want, just make the inner frame fit the metal.

DIY Decorative “Vintage” Wood Ladder

Last fall I helped my good friend with a few DIY wedding decor projects for her step-daughter’s wedding.  The wedding turned out so beautiful. It was held at a venue with a large open grass field and a unique old barn as the backdrop. The colors for the wedding were mint, gray, white and champagne and all of the decor had a rustic flare to tie in with the barn.  One of the DIY wedding decor projects was for a vintage wood ladder inspired by this one.  I made the ladder rails and steps a little bit wider than the inspiration ladder to make it easier to place decorations on the steps.

5 Drawer Dresser Changing Table

For my first two babies, I used a simple stand as a changing table, it was the exact size of the changing pad but had zero storage. I had plenty of closet space to hold all of their stuff.  When baby #3 was coming along, I realized that I had to do something for storing for her stuff, since the other two filled up what storage space I had.  Babies need so much stuff, diapers, wipes, special shampoo, bum stuff, clothes clothes clothes, accessories, it never ends. 🙂 I decided to build her a dresser/changing table. I should have started on it earlier but didn’t know what design I wanted to make.

Earlier my neighbor had redone a few of her daughters rooms with bead board. They had the bead board go about 2/3rds up the wall, so this meant they had a lot of 1/3 sheets of bead board left. She gave me a number of the 1/3 sheets. I thought it would be fun to use up some of the bead board with this dresser. I turned the bead board to go horizontal to give the changing table a little more of a planked wood look.

Free plans to build a DIY 5 drawer dresser/changing table with bead board detail.

Warning – Make sure you secure dressers to the wall for children’s safety.
