My Aunt’s house was built in the early 90’s, when honey oak was all the rage. She’s had a few updates along the way, but she is ready to get rid of her honey oak mantel and go light and bright with a modern craftsman mantel and shiplap wall. One major goal of this makeover is to mount her large 75″ TV above her fireplace. The current oak mantel is too tall to mount the TV and it is not wide enough to look balanced with the TV.

Before I came to help her with the mantel and shiplap wall, she had an electrician come and move some outlets and put a cord tube (blue) in the wall so she won’t have cords showing.

She is LOVING the new look and having the TV mounted and out of the corner of the room. The bright white really lightens up the space up!

This post will show how I built the mantel from a $32 sheet of MDF and some 2×4’s. This whole wall makeover with the shiplap, mantel, paint, supplies etc came in less than $300. It made a huge impact and didn’t cost that much money! yay

I am no stranger to doing projects in the cold weather. Working on the farm, my Dad would always save the larger farm upgrade projects for the winter-time. In the Spring, Summer and Fall we were always too busy with the grain and alfalfa work, and we usually had less turkeys to raise in the winter.

A few years ago, I was helping him build 2 new 480 ft long turkey sheds in the dead of winter.  My home town in Utah will often get down to -25 deg F at night, subsequently inside the sheds it was around 0 deg F.  For these new sheds, my Dad trying out this ceiling and insulation technology that is quite common for poultry farms in the south.  The ceiling was installed by a special crew that came up from Alabama.

The crew had a few experienced older guys and a younger guy, who seemed to get all of the ‘bad’ jobs. The poor young guy was freezing trying to work up here, being from the south and not having the outerwear for winter. A couple days into the job, he had enough and decided to quit right then and there. He started walking back to his hotel room, 7 miles away!  About the same time, my Dad was driving down the farm road and saw him. He stopped to give him a ride. My Dad asked where he was going, and the young Alabaman said that he quit because ‘these are the WORST CONDITIONS HE’S EVER BEEN IN’.

What that young Alabama man needs is a Ridgid heated jacket, heated with 18 volt batteries!

Leaning Crate Ladder Bookshelf and Desk

A few years ago I used some crates to make a leaning ladder shelf for my daughters room. As she got older, I noticed that she started using the middle crate (shelf) as a desk to color and do homework. I realized that I could rework the leaning shelf a little to make a proper desk. To add more storage options to her room, I made 3 leaning shelves, a desk, bookshelf and bookshelf with a storage bin. These leaning ladder shelves are made with large crates, they are easy to make and modular.

For this project I used these fun weathered gray crates. I love that they are already stained and ready to use!

Custom Drill Storage and Charge Station – Easy

Over 5 years ago, I made some plans for my friend to build a cordless drill storage charge station with 5 stalls. It has been the most built project on my site, which is awesome. My original version uses plywood, which was great for using up scrap pieces. However there have been 2 comments that I get frequently, “I want to make this but I need X stalls” and “I don’t have a table saw to cut down plywood.” To solve both of these comments, I have made a new plan that uses simpler tools (miter saw or circular saw and straight edge). This custom drill storage and charge station build uses a 1×10 board and a spreadsheet to input how many stalls you want for tools and kick out a custom cut list.

If you want a 2 stall drill storage, you can do that.

Organize your cordless drills and tools with a custom drill storage and charge station for about $20! Tell the plans how many tool stalls you want, and the free plans will customize your cut list. Free plans on hertoolbelt.com

Or if you want a 10 stall drill storage, you can do that.

This custom drill storage organizer makes a great homemade gift for your favorite tool loving friends. To celebrate Christmas I’m giving away $100 Christmas Cash each week until Christmas (enter using the rafflecopter widget at the bottom of the post).
